About Kallabash Culinary Studio
Our History
Let me introduce myself, DeVoria Simmons Executive, chef, culinary teacher and caterer. It all started in 2005 when I began teaching culinary Arts to adults in New York city. It was so rewarding empowering others that had the love of food. Being a teacher has been my passion and sharing my love of cooking with others is exciting. In 2013 I decide to come back home to Detroit to continue teaching, I choose to teach teenager. I wanted to make a difference with the youth in my hometown. Sharing cultural experience through food.
My dream of having my own cooking school is becoming a reality. Join me and become a be apart of my continued adventure at Kallabash Culinary Studio.
Our Classes
Our curriculum is designed to provide our students with a global food experience. From the Caribbean, Spain, Latin American, France ,Italy, Asia and regional American. We will be offering baking and pastry classes later. Our courses cover everything our students need to experience food from different cultures. Our instructors are some of the most talented and experienced chefs in the industry. With many years of experience in some of the world's finest kitchens, they have the knowledge and expertise to help our students succeed.
What is a Kallabash / Calabash
The calabash symbol is the shape of the calabash gourd which looks like two bulbous entities on top of each other. In China, Calabash was used by doctors in Ancient China to transport medicine. It is a symbol of health.
Calabash also has a large cultural significance. In many African legends, Calabash (commonly referred to as gourds) are presented as a vessel for knowledge and wisdom. Because of its shape it represent the Divine Mother Ancestral Wisdom, To nurture and empower Lives Today.
